The Ultimate Explorer Collection: The 2004 Lewis and Clark Coin and Currency Collection

The United States of America was built upon the backs of the hardy adventurers who braved the dangerous and mysterious terrain that has become forever known as the Wild West. Today, March 23rd, marks the anniversary of Lewis and Clark's trip to return home after successfully reaching the Pacific Ocean after more than a year and a half of hardship and exploration.

In honor of this momentous occasion, we searched the nation over for what has become the #1 Lewis and Clark coin collection ever made: the 2004 Coin and Currency!

A Purchase of Land & the Explorers who became Legend

The Louisiana Purchase was bought in 1803 from the French by President Thomas Jefferson, and was an acquisition that nearly doubled the size of the United States at the time! After this massive expansion of our borders, Jefferson reached out to two of his frontier ambassadors, Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, to explore this new land. The expedition, which would be known as the Corps of Volunteers of Northwestern Discovery, and was charged with the important duty of exploring and mapping this new territory.

The iconic duo of Lewis and Clark would go down as two of the most successful military explorers in the history of the United States...but many forgot the Mint's special coin collection from 2004 in their honor! Not only that, but it was also a complete sellout at the U.S. Mint when it initially launched, making it one of the most sought after sets in all of collecting!

A Collection Honoring America's History

The set they produced in 2004 was an absolute HIT with collectors! This HUGE collection contains an astonishing 8 individual pieces! The 8 pieces inside of this collection are as follows:
One Uncirculated 2004 Lewis & Clark Silver Dollar
One Uncirculated 2004 Denver Mint Sacagawea Dollar
Two Special Release Nickels: One Peace and One Keelboat design
Three commemorative stamps (One portrait each of Lewis & Clark, and one scene with both)
One Replica Peace Medal (same design as the one gifted by Lewis and Clark to the Natives)
One Replica 1901 $10 Bison Note
Did You Know? When it initially went on sale on May 12, 2004 the United States Mint had no set household limit for the product...fast forward a few hours later, and they had received so many orders that a strict limit of just 10 per household was imposed to ensure everyone had a chance to own this iconic collection! Talk about a popular collection!
