2023 American Women Quarter Series

The 2023 series of the American Women Quarters Program continued to pay tribute to groundbreaking women who have left indelible marks on American culture, activism, science, and arts. This year's quarters celebrated individuals like Bessie Coleman, the first African American and first Native American woman pilot, who became an icon of determination and resilience. Edith Kanakaʻole, an esteemed Hawaiian composer, cultural practitioner, and educator, was recognized for her pivotal role in revitalizing Hawaiian language and culture. Eleanor Roosevelt, an influential First Lady and human rights advocate, was featured for her tireless work in advancing civil rights and women's rights. Jovita Idár, a journalist, activist, and educator who championed the rights of Mexican Americans and women, was also honored. Lastly, Maria Tallchief, America's first major prima ballerina and the first Native American to hold such a distinction, was celebrated for her contributions to the arts.
