2022 American Women Quarter Series
The inaugural year of the US Mint's American Women Quarters Program in 2022 celebrated a diverse group of extraordinary women whose achievements have significantly contributed to American society in various fields. The quarters featured Maya Angelou, the celebrated writer, performer, and social activist known for her impactful works that explore themes of African American identity and experience. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, was also honored, highlighting her contributions to science and education. Other honorees included Wilma Mankiller, the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, advocating for Indigenous sovereignty and women's rights; Nina Otero-Warren, a leader in New Mexico's suffrage movement and the first female superintendent of Santa Fe public schools; and Anna May Wong, the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood, who broke barriers and fought against stereotypical roles.
