Liberty Seated Quarter

First issued in 1838 replacing the Capped Bust Quarter, the Seated Liberty Quarter has seen a few changes throughout its run. Its design, used on almost all subsequent coinage until 1892, was based on sketches by Thomas Sully. The US Mint's assistant engraver Christian Gobrecht executed dies featuring the seated Liberty figure with her right hand resting upon the Union Shield and her left grasping a staff topped by a Liberty Cap. The reverse, shared with the half dollar and dollar, depicts an eagle with a shield upon its breast. Along with it, inscribed is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR, and the new motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Mintmarks can be found below the eagle ('O' - New Orleans, 'S' - San Francisco, and 'CC' - Carson City). Where there's no mintmark to be found, these pieces were made at our primary mint in Philadelphia.
