The Beginning of A New Mint Set Era: The First 5 Modern Issues

Most will agree the finest uncirculated coins released by the U.S. Mint each year are in the official Uncirculated Set - otherwise known as the U.S. "Mint Set." What makes these sets so popular is that they contain every denomination issued from each mint during that calendar year...from the Cent through the Half Dollar, and in today’s sets, the Dollar. Since 1959 these sets have been sealed in protective plastic envelopes; with the introduction of their "Modern Issue" Mint Set packaging beginning in 1968 with the release of that years historic U.S. Mint Set.

These Mint Sets have been one of the U.S. Mint's most popular collector items for well over 50 years and still going strong! First are always remembered as special, and we have put together quite the special collection...thanks to a lucky find, we can bring you the first five U.S. Mint Sets issued in the Modern era!

The Finest Strikes From the Old Granite Lady!

We have assembled a collection of U.S. Mint Sets from the first 5 years of the Modern Issue era after an interesting find by one of our purchasing specialists. A local coin shop in the Midwest reached out to us about a large number of Mint Sets they had discovered. Much to our surprise, this hoard contained hundreds of beautiful mint-condition U.S. Mint Sets! This massive stockpile contained Mint Sets from every single year of issue, with a large number of them being produced before 1980!

Each coin is still in the original U.S. Mint poly packaging and envelope as issued over 50 years ago, and are quite simply breathtaking! The coins within these U.S. Mint Sets were minted at the Philadelphia, Denver & and San Francisco Mints and contain each regular issue business strike coin produced during that year.

The “Secret” Half Dollars and The Forgotten "S" Mint Issues!

During the first decade of the Modern Issue Era of Mint Sets, the U.S. Mint issued a select few coins that were only released in these official uncirculated U.S. Mint Sets. Because these coins were never released into circulation, the only way to obtain them is to break them out of their respective Mint Sets! As the years have passed, one of these rare U.S. Mint only coins has become a key within the series and this collection has it...the extremely hard to find 1970 D Kennedy Half Dollar.

And here’s something else you might not know! For the last 50 years, our circulating coins have come from the Philadelphia & Denver Mints. But during this first decade of production, the U.S. Mint did issue a few San Francisco Mint coins for circulation! Eight total circulation strike coins were minted at San Francisco…5 Lincoln Cents from 1968 to 1972 as well as 3 Jefferson Nickels from 1968 to 1970! These five U.S. Mint Sets contain all of these “forgotten” S Mints!
