The Rare Carson City Morgans of 1890
The Morgan Silver Dollar is without a doubt one of the most iconic coins in U.S. Mint history, and the 1890 Carson City edition is among the most sought-after. Struck by the fabled Carson City Mint, which began producing Morgan Dollars in 1878 and concluded in 1893, these coins represent a rare piece of Wild-West history. Despite its substantial mintage, less than 2.5% of these coins are known to exist today in any condition, making them exceptionally hard to find.
As of today (01/30/2024), NGC and PCGS have certified just 30,945 of the 1890-CC Morgan Dollars, translating to roughly 1.34% of the entire mintage. This rarity is underscored when comparing the 1890-CC to the highest mintage Carson City Morgan Dollars, such as the 1885 and 1881 issues, which are significantly more common today.
Our recent discovery of a small hoard of these coins allows us to offer the 1890 Carson City Morgan Dollars in beautiful collector's quality circulated condition, housed in our popular new Defender Holder. This presents a unique opportunity to own a piece of American history for a fraction of the price of higher mintage counterparts.
