A New Cent for a New Century The Lincoln Cent has been in circulation longer than any other coin in US History. It was introduced in 1909 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The obverse featured a bust of Lincoln and when first introduced the reverse featured a pair of wheat ears. In 1959, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, the reverse design was changed to the Lincoln Memorial design. Then in 2009, for the 200th Anniversary of his birth and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Cent, the US Mint released four different reverse designs, each representing a different stage of Lincoln's life. BUT few were aware the changes going forward...
In 2010 the US Mint unveiled a NEW Lincoln cent. One that is emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States as a single and united country... called the "Union Shield". As Director of the Mint, Edmund C. Moy referenced at the release: "This 1-cent coin honors the preservation of the union, which was Abraham Lincoln's ultimate achievement. Because of his Presidency, despite bitter regional enmity and a horrific civil war, we remained the United States of America." According to Moy, the Union Shield design will appear on the reverse of Lincoln cents struck for the next 50 years.
