What Exactly is a “Proof Set”?

For roughly the first 100 years of production, proof sets were intended for royalty or diplomatic personnel... but in the 1930's the U.S. Mint released the sets to the public for the first time. It started with humble beginnings but over the past 70 plus years it has evolved into the top collector set issued by the U.S. Mint annually.

A proof is a coin produced by the finest method of manufacture struck by the U.S. Mint. You can tell a coin is "proof" by the razor sharp detail, high wire edge, and the mirror like surface... you can actually see yourself. When proofs were introduced in the middle of the 1800's, they were used as presentation pieces. One of the most famous, fabled proof sets known is the "King of Siam" proof set... originally given as a diplomatic gift to the King of Siam in 1836, from President Andrew Jackson. A Proof Set consists of coins struck in one give year only and includes one of each denomination released into circulation during that year.
