Reinventing American Coinage

We can thank President Theodore Roosevelt for the Walking Liberty design. After reviewing the current Barber series designs, he proclaimed the series unattractive and repetitive. Roosevelt felt U.S. coinage should boldly represent the rising prominence of America, the young nation which had now claimed its throne as the greatest nation in the world. With this concept on his mind, Roosevelt led a revolution to redesign U.S. coinage to be the best the world has ever seen.

The Walking Liberty - Where it Began

The reform was led by this Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar made out of .900 fine silver, each with .36169 oz of silver. It was issued from 1916 until 1947, when it was replaced by the Franklin Half Dollar. It is considered by people across the globe to be the most beautiful design ever featured on a U.S. coin. So popular, that when the Mint released the Silver Eagle Dollar in 1986, they re-issued the design. The Silver Eagle Dollar is now the most coveted silver dollar in the world today. But the design debuted on the Half Dollar.

A Mint Mark Collection

Many collectors assemble a coinage series based the origin of the coin, taking careful note of the various U.S. Mints that produced and released the coin. During its reign, the Walking Liberty was struck at three Mints: Philadelphia, no mint mark; Denver, D; and San Francisco, S. The mint mark is visible on the back of the coin at approximately seven o'clock. We've assembled a three piece set, one coin from each mint, for almost half the price of our competition.
