About this Product Full Product Name

The first official mintage of the large cent was in 1793 and its production continued until 1857 when it was replaced by the modern sized penny. Large cents were made of nearly pure copper, or as pure as it emerged from smelting without any addition of other metals. It was coins ever year between 1793 to 1857 except 1815 when the United States declared war in 1812 against Great Britain. The Philadelphia Mint produced all large cents.

Coronet Cents (1816-1839)

The public wasn't quiet with their criticisms of the Classic Head cent design, the U.S. Mint assigned Chief Engraver Scot to redesign the cent in 1816. He enlarged the portrait of Liberty and giving her a more mature look with stars surrounding the portrait at the outer edge of the coin.

Braided Hair Cents (1839 - 1857)

For the last and final time the large cents would get its final design change thanks to even more negative reactions. This last change to Liberty's appearance was to make her slimmer and more youthful looking. Minor tweaks continued though 1843 and prevailed till the end of the series in 1857.

FUN FACT: 11 years after the large cent was discontinued, a Mint employee coined several large cents dates 1868. Fewer than a dozen of these unofficial issues are known to exist.

Our selection is hand picked circulated condition and will arrive to you in a capsule and black velvet pouch.
