The San Francisco Mint produced Morgan Silver dollars from 1878 until 1904 (as well as for a single year in 1921), but when compared to other mintages the numbers are staggering: The San Francisco Mint produced less than 18% of ALL Morgan Dollars! That makes S-Mint Morgan dollars a rarity within a rarity, but wait… it gets even better!
Proof-Like coins are extremely rare, high quality, coin specimens that are a direct result of the coin minting process used by the United States Mint. You see, when the U.S. Mint puts a coin die into production, they first polish the die ... this polishing puts a special luster on the first handful of coins that are struck using this new die. These rare pieces have the visual luster of a proof coin, but were still only struck once like all uncirculated coinage from the United States Mint, hence the nickname "Proof-Like." These coins are the finest examples of Morgan Dollars in existence and, as some of the rarest pieces in the Morgan Dollar series, are a must-have for any serious collector’s Morgan Dollar collection!
Proof-Like Morgan Dollars are extremely rare, and often cost a pretty penny to own… for example the cheapest we could find was $200, but the vast majority were retailing for upwards of $500 – many upwards of $1,000!
