Celebrate the Discovery of America: The 1892 & 1893 Christopher Columbus Half Dollar Pair

While there is much debate, it goes without question that there would not be a United States of America as we know it today without the actions of one explorer: Christopher Columbus. His drive for discovery and adventure helped find what would eventually become the United States of America and the Caribbean Islands. In fact, just yesterday was the 529th anniversary of Christopher Columbus setting sail towards the Americas.

In honor of this special anniversary, we decided to bring back both of the two original Christopher Columbus coins.

Many collectors are aware of the 1992 special issue dollar and half dollar that honor Christopher Columbus, but what many do not know is that these coins were in fact the SECOND time they had honored the great explorer.

Over 129 years ago, the U.S. Mint decided to break tradition and create their very first ‘special issue’ coins... the historic 1892 and 1893 Columbus Half Dollars!

A Pair of 129 year old U.S. Mint firsts

The two half dollars minted in 1892 and 1893 are the very first ‘special release’ coins produced by the mint in the history of the U.S. These Columbus Half Dollars were also the first coinage in the history the U.S. to bear the likeness of a true to history human being… the great explorer, Christopher Columbus. Minted to both raise funds for the Columbian World’s Fair coming in 1893 as well as to celebrate the quadricentennial of Columbus’ first voyage to the American Continent… only two and a half million of these coins were ever issued! Over the last 129 years very few Columbus Half dollars have survived in collector’s quality condition due to large quantities being melted down. Thanks to a lucky find at the Florida F.U.N. show, we have a small handful of these 129 year old beauties in absolutely stunning collector's quality circulated condition.

Did you know...? Prior to the Columbus Half Dollars, all U.S. Mint issues featured portraits of our iconic Lady Liberty. That's right, Christopher Columbus was the first living person to be featured on U.S. Coinage.

With a portrait of the great explorer and discoverer Christopher Columbus on the obverse, and a representation of Columbus' flagship the Santa Maria above two hemispheres on the reverse…this piece is truly an icon of U.S. Mint History.

Our two-coin set includes both the 1892 and 1893 Columbus Half Dollars in collector’s quality circulated condition and is preserved in our collector's display box.

But hurry, it took us the entire year just to find a handful of these coins…Grab your piece of U.S. Minting history today before they are gone for good.

Don’t miss out on what could be your only chance to own these incredible coins.

Each 2 pc. set will arrive in collector's quality circulated condition.
