The First Peace Dollars Ever Made: The 1921 High Relief Philadelphia Mint Issue!

2021 saw the 100 year anniversary of the transition from the Morgan Dollar to the Peace dollar, and in honor of this occasion we saw the U.S. Mint create the first new Peace Silver Dollar since the series came to an end in 1935! These new Peace Dollars were some of the most popular releases from the U.S. Mint in decades!

We have spent the last year searching the country, and we are proud to announce the return of the Peace Dollar that started it all – the Philadelphia Mint issue 1921 High Relief!

These coins were among the first Peace Dollars ever struck by the U.S. Mint and their high-relief status has made them a must-have among silver dollar collectors the world over!

A New World Era – A Brand New Silver Dollar!

There are a select few coins through the history of the United States Mint with a better story than the fabled Peace Dollar… and it all began with US Victory & the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28th, 1919 to mark the official end of the First World War, otherwise known as the 'Great War'.

In the aftermath of this global conflict, our nation needed a new dollar to signify their transition away from the years of bloodshed and violence that had gripped them during the world war. They needed a coin to herald in the new era of peace that was to be ushered in…and that is exactly what they decided to call the coin: The Peace!

The Peace Dollar was the final silver dollar ever produced by the United States mint meant for everyday circulation, and was minted from 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935. These historic silver dollars were also the last of their kind to ever be produced by the U.S. Mint!

No Approval From Congress? No Problem!

The Peace Dollar was issued without congressional approval under the terms of the Pittman Act of 1918. The act referred to a bullion dollar being created, but did not specify the design. Coin collectors lobbied the Mint to issue a coin that memorialized the peace following World War I. Congress would not pass a bill requiring a design change (the Morgan was the last released), but they were able to persuade government officials to take action.

Did you know? The new Peace Dollar would be the first U.S. coin to be issued without congressional sanction.

The Rare ‘High Relief’ 1921 Peace Dollars – a First-Year Rarity!

The original design of the peace dollar was a coin struck with a high-relief. The images of Liberty and Majestic Eagle were created higher than traditional coins, but after only a month the design was re-worked. The coins wouldn't stack properly, creating an issue for merchants across the country. The design incorporated the word "In God We Trust" like all U.S. coins ... but here the word "Trust" was spelled "Trvst" - the letter for V for victory in WWI.

These pre-design change High-Relief Peace Dollars are some of the most sought after in the series thanks to the incredibly small number of them that exist today – Most people who get their hands on them never let them out of their collection!
