About this Product Full Product Name

Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing with the First Year of Issue Apollo 11 Silver Dollar!

Apollo 11 is iconic for a number of reasons. It signified man's first steps. The Apollo 11 Lunar Landing was so significant to American society that the decision was made to honor the historic mission on the new dollars that was being produced. The 1st silver dollar issued by the United States Mint in 35 years . The 1971 Eisenhower / "Apollo 11 Lunar Landing" Dollar.

A Design that's out of this world!

1971 was the First year of issue for the Eisenhower Silver Dollar, and at the behest of congress the chief engraver designed the reverse to commemorate the historic Apollo 11 Lunar Landing. The design of the reverse was actually based on the mission patch conceived by astronaut Michael Collins and others for the Apollo 11 mission. The reverse depicts an eagle (this figure represents the actual Apollo 11 Lunar Lander, which was named Eagle) swooping low over the Moon's surface, holding an olive branch, to be taken as a moniker of peace, in its claws. Our very own planet Earth even makes a cameo appearance, and can be found in the background of the coin's field, just to the left above the eagles head.

A 35 year drought over: The first year of issue 1971 Eisenhower Dollar

After President Eisenhower's death in 1969 we were looking to commemorate the legacy left behind by the five-star general / 34th President. We just replaced the Franklin Half Dollar with the Kennedy in 1964, and no one wanted to replace Lincoln (cent), Jefferson (nickel), Roosevelt (dime) or Washington (quarter)...so we brought back the Dollar after 35 years without production.

The Eisenhower Dollar was released into circulation in 1971, and was minted at the San Francisco, Philadelphia and Denver Mints. It was an old school dollar...a large - 38.1 mm in diameter...the same size as the Morgan & Peace made half a century earlier.

The Complete Set...All 4 Eisenhower Dollars Minted in 1971

So the official total for the first year of issue for the new dollars would be four coins...the circulation strikes from the Philadelphia & Denver Mints, plus the two special "secret silver" issues from the San Francisco Mint.

The San Francisco Mint issued two special "silver" Eisenhower dollars in 1971, an uncirculated and a proof version. The Silver Proof is the only proof made in 1971. The mintage's were very small...and neither was released into circulation.
