A 90% Silver Dollar in Jefferson’s Honor: The 1993 Proof

On September 5th, 1775 a group of colonial delegates met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to discuss their response to the “Intolerable Acts” , a piece of legislation enacted by the British Crown in response to the Boston Tea Party. These delegates determined that their only course of action was to fight for their freedom against the tyrannical British Empire. A small group of five men were selected to create a legal document that would let the British Crown, and the world at large, know the intentions of their new nation. The Declaration of Independence was then drafted, led by a man who would become our commander in chief just a few decades later: Thomas Jefferson himself!

Yesterday was the anniversary of his election as the 3rd President of the United States of America. In honor of this presidential occasion, we have decided to bring back one of the special coins they made to celebrate our founding father: the 1993 Thomas Jefferson Proof Dollar struck from 90% Silver!

Did You Know? Jeffersonian Democracy favored states’ rights and a strictly limited federal government.

A Man of Many Hats: Author, President, Founding Father

Our 3rd President was one of the most influential people involved in the development of our young nation. Not only was he the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, but he was also the president who led the largest land expansion in our history, the famous Louisiana Purchase (1803)!

I feel President Kennedy said it best way back in 1962 at an event at the White House, one in which he invited 49 Nobel Prize winners... "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent and of human knowledge that has ever been gathered together at the White House - with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."

Jefferson also played a major role in the development of our national currency and the establishment of the U.S. Mint. Over the years he has been commemorated on a number of regularly circulated U.S. Coins and Currency…a claim to fame only Jefferson, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin can make!
