Design of the 2003 Missouri State Quarter

The 2003 Missouri State Quarter is the 24th release in the acclaimed 50 State Quarters Program by the United States Mint. The coin's reverse design, created by Alfred Maletsky and sculpted by Harry Weber, features three significant elements:

  1. A representation of the historic Lewis and Clark expedition, symbolizing Missouri's pivotal role in the westward expansion of the United States;
  2. An image of the iconic Gateway Arch, celebrating Missouri's status as the "Gateway to the West";
  3. The inscription "Corps of Discovery 1804-2004," commemorating the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition and the spirit of exploration and discovery it represents.

The coin's obverse, designed by John Flanagan, features the classic portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States.
