Tomorrow is a very special day, it marks the 52nd anniversary of the nomination of one of our most influential members in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court: Thurgood Marshall! The Supreme Court of the United States of America is our highest federal court and is often the deciding factor in many hot-button issues. With the Supreme court being so integral to everyday American life, it made perfect sense when the U.S. Mint finally created a special-release collection to honor the institution!

Released in 2005 in honor of the 250th anniversary of John Marshall’s birth, these silver dollars came in both proof and uncirculated condition...but there was a special-release set from the U.S. Mint that included these Chief Justice silver dollars that flew under the radar...and they were some of the rarest collections ever released by the United States Mint!

From 1983 all the way to 1997, the United States Mint produced a limited-edition proof set known as the ‘Prestige Proof Sets’. The only problem was that collectors LOVED these high-quality collections so much so that after an 8-year hiatus these iconic collections re-emerged as the new “American Legacy Collections”.

Luckily for the U.S. Mint, they struck gold twice! These new sets were not only loved by collectors for their high-quality strikes, multiple 90% Silver coins, and wonderful packaging, but their rarity as well! These sets typically had a mintage of less than 50,000....that automatically makes them some of the rarest collections ever made by the United States Mint!
