The Secret Morgan Silver Dollar from 2006! The rare Uncirculated 90% Silver issue!

Today is the anniversary of the great 1906 Earthquake that simultaneously leveled the city of San Francisco and catapulted it’s United States Mint branch into legend! This monumental disaster saw almost the entirety of the city destroyed... and one of the few buildings left standing in the aftermath was the San Francisco Mint! This iconic structure, who would later become known as the “Old Granite Lady”, is also known for producing some of the finest Morgan Dollars in the history of the program! So When it came time to honor this historic mint’s 100th anniversary in 2006, they decided to do something a little different…in fact, they brought back the ‘Morgan’ Dollar design for the first time in over 85 years! With This weekend’s anniversary in mind, we couldn’t think of a better time to bring back an all-time fan favorite: the Uncirculated 2006 San Francisco Mint Morgan Silver Dollar!

The San Francisco Mint: The Old Granite Lady’s

The San Francisco ‘Old Mint’ building (which was the second building in the city to house the San Francisco Mint), was designed by architect A.B. Mullett, who had also designed the United States Department of the Treasury building and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building! The extremely sound and solid construction of the "Granite Lady" enabled it to survive the catastrophic 1906 earthquake and fire…. making it the only financial institution able to operate immediately after the earthquake as the Treasury for disaster relief funds for the city of San Francisco! As one of the few buildings left standing in San Francisco in the wake of this disaster, the “Old Granite Lady” became an integral part in rebuilding the “Golden Gate City”. Following this rebuilding effort, the San Francisco Mint went on to become a symbol of American resilience in the face of disaster!

The 21st Century Morgan Dollar Everyone Forgot!

The San Francisco Mint's primary function was to produce silver dollars...and many experts believe that they produced some of the finest examples of Morgan Dollars in the entire series! As such, "S" mint Morgan dollars have become known for their strong razor sharp strike, with superb luster and brilliant surfaces. The ‘Old Granite Lady’ produced Morgan Dollars from 1878 until 1904 (as well as for a single year in 1921), but when compared to other Mint’s production numbers, the results are staggering: The San Francisco Mint produced less than 18% of ALL Morgan Dollars! This distinction set the San Francisco Mint apart, as it truly was the finest Morgan Dollar Mint! With such a distinct history producing Morgan Dollars, it was a no-brainer decision on what the coin’s design would be…the Obverse features a rendition of the “Old Granite Lady” the San Francisco Mint herself, while the Reverse has an exact replica of the 1904 Morgan Silver Dollar “Eagle reverse”! So while not a “true” Morgan Dollar, it is the closest thing to it! Then to top it all off, they decided to strike these 2006 San Francisco Mint ‘Morgan’ Dollars in stunning 90% Silver!
