The Spartan program was formed in secret by the United Nations Space Command (UNSC), the military arm of the Unified Earth Government, to create a soldier unlike any the universe had seen before. The Spartans are bigger, faster, stronger, and more skilled than even the most decorated soldier with a lifetime of training and experience.

When fully armored a Spartan commando is a walking tank so powerful that just one of them was able to turn the tide in the War against the Covenant (an alien race hell-bent on the destruction of humanity). That man was 'Master Chief' Petty Officer Spartan John-117 -- the main character in Halo! (He is referred to simply as 'Master Chief' while in the field)

When the Covenant began their full-scale invasion of Earth, it was John-117 who fought tooth and nail to ensure that not only would humanity survive the attack -- they would strike back and see the alien menace destroyed and dismantled!
