The Flying Eagle

Firsts are always remembered and this one is no exception. The Flying Eagle cent was our first small size cent and was struck for three years, 1856-1858. The Philadlephia Mint released the new cents to the public in May of 1857. On the day of its release, hundreds of people lined up to exchange their old coins, for this new fascinating small sized cent.

In fact, the public interest in these Flying Eagle Cents set off a coin collecting boom. Collectors paid up to Two Dollars for these coins, which at the time was unheard of. Unfortunately, however, this coins existence was limited. Issues with striking and officals led to its demise in 1858. However short its life may have been, its impact upon American coin collecting culture is legendary!
