About this Product Full Product Name

A Special Collection Honoring our First Commander-in-Chief: The 3 George Washington 1st!

George Washington is considered to be the father of our great nation...and when you look at all his accomplishments, it's easy to see why! He began as a militia commander during the French and Indian War and grew to become the leader of our nation in war as the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Today is a special anniversary for our great first president Washington! On this very day more than 226 years ago in 1793, Washington laid the cornerstone of our Capitol building in the city named after him, Washington D.C.

In Honor of today’s iconic anniversary, we are bringing back a special 3pc. Set that contains the first three coins struck by the United States Mint to honor our first Commander in Chief!

The Original Commander-in-Chief Coin: The 1932 Washington Quarter!

The Washington Quarter was released in 1932 on the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s Birth & at the time the coin was meant to be one-year-only issue... but due to overwhelming popularity Congress authorized the design to be continued indefinitely! Simply put, the public LOVED the Washington Quarter and its simple yet beautiful design!

Thanks to its timeless design the Washington Quarter has always been very popular among collectors … but it went to another level when the US Mint chose the quarter denomination for its ground-breaking 50 State Quarter program. The State Quarter Series lasted for over 11 years (the 50 State and 6 Territories) and introduced hundreds of millions of new collectors to the world of United States coin collecting. In essence, a larger portion of MODERN coin collecting within the United States owes its existence to the popularity of President Washington’s Quarter!

Did you know? Originally Congress wanted to put Washington on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar for the year, but ended up displacing, and then replacing, the Standing Liberty Quarter with our beloved Washington Quarter we use today!

The Two 90 % Silver Half Dollars that Collectors Forgot!

Yes you read that correctly, a George Washington Half Dollar! It was released to great fanfare in 1982 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our 1st president's birth. They were the first 90% silver coins struck by the US Mint since 1964, and signified the return of 90% Silver coinage to the United States Numismatics. The US Mint released two versions of the George Washington Half Dollar... an uncirculated piece struck at the Denver Mint and it’s proof counterpart that was produced at the fabled San Francisco Mint. The coins themselves are works of art, with the obverse featuring Washington sitting on horseback, and the reverse showing Washington's home in Mount Vernon.

So how did these special Silver Half Dollars go unnoticed? Well it is actually quite simple, it was only 1982 when these coins came out! That means there wasn’t an email list or a website that you would use today available back then, which meant many die-hard collectors never got a chance to own these stunning George Washington Half Dollars!
