When the U.S. Mint released the Morgan Silver Dollar for the first time in 1878, they immediately had a problem -- they apparently had put the wrong number of eagle's feathers on the design. Many prominent members of the media and collecting world at the time quickly pointed out that the eagle's tail was all wrong -- namely the fact that it had eight tailfeathers!
The U.S. Mint quickly released a 'corrected' version of the Morgan Dollar design with seven tailfeathers just a few weeks later -- which consequently made those 'mistake Morgan Dollars' with eight tailfeathers must-have collectors coins.
All together it is believed that just 749,500 total coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with this design -- compare that to the 9,759,300 total coins struck with the 'correct' 7-tailfeather design. These first year of issue 8-Tailfeather Morgan Dollars are 13 times rarer.
Each 1878 8-Tailfeather Morgan Dollar will arrive with each coin encapsulated and in Uncirculated condition.
