Our Most Beautiful Coin - No Questions!

A Brief History

We can thank President Theodore Roosevelt for the Walking Liberty design. He reviewed the current designs and felt they were unattractive and repetitive ( the Barber series ). Roosevelt felt that our coinage should boldly represent the rising prominence of America, which had taken it's throne as the Greatest Nation in the World. With this idea in mind, Roosevelt led a revolution to redesign our coinage to be the greatest the world has ever seen.

The Walking Liberty is the King!

The change was led by this Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar. It was issued from 1916 until 1947, replaced by the Franklin Half Dollar. It is considered by most to be the most beautiful design ever placed on a US coin. So popular, that when the US Mint released the Silver Eagle Dollar in 1986 they re-issued the design. Not surprising, the Silver Eagle Dollar is also the #1 silver dollar in the world today. Each Walking Liberty Half Dollar is made out of .900 fine silver ( .36169 oz of silver each ).

A Mint Mark Collection

One of the most popular ways to collect a coinage series is by the various US Mint that released the coin. During its reign the Walking Liberty was struck at 3 US Mints .. Philadelphia (No Mint Mark), Denver (D) and San Francisco (S). The mint mark is visible on the back of the coin at approximately 7 o'clock.

This set was issued in 1947.
