About Bessie Coleman
Bessie Coleman, the first African American and Native American woman to hold a pilot's license, broke barriers and inspired generations with her determination, courage, and passion for aviation. The 2023 American Women Quarters series pays tribute to her extraordinary achievements, capturing her spirit on a beautiful, collectible coin.
Tragically, Bessie Coleman's life was cut short on April 30, 1926, during a test flight in preparation for an air show in Jacksonville, Florida. A mechanical issue caused her plane to go into a dive and spin, leading to a fatal crash. Though her life ended prematurely, Bessie's impact on aviation and civil rights left a lasting legacy. She inspired future generations of African American pilots, including the Tuskegee Airmen, and paved the way for women of color in aviation. This inspired the US mint to honor her on their first issue of the American Women Quarters for 2023.
