The United States Territory Quarter Program


The 2009 District of Columbia Quarter is the first coin in the United States Territories Quarter Series. The series is an extension to the 50 State Quarter series that honored each of the 50 State between 1999-2008.

This series will include: District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and Northern Mariana Islands.

There will be 6 Quarters released this year.(The State Quarter Program only issued 5 quarters per year.) Each of the 6 quarters will be issued for only about 8-9 weeks, making their production limited. Like the State Quarters, each quarter will be minted from the Philadelphia and the Denver Mint. The obverse design showing George Washington remains unchanged, while the reverse design reflects the history and culture of the District of Columbia and the United States Territories.

The District of Columbia was first proposed in 1783 as the permanent residence of the nation's capital and the seat of the United States Government. The city, which originally occupied only a small portion of the District of Columbia, was named Washington as a tribute to President George Washington, hence given the name "Washington D.C."

The District of Columbia Quarter Design Advisory Committee chose native, Duke Ellington, to adorn the design, where he is standing next to a grand piano. Also featured on the coin is the District of Columbia's motto, "Justice for All".

These rolls each contain 40 uncirculated Quarters. One roll from the Denver Mint and another from the Philadelphia Mint.Please keep the coins in their protective tube holder provided to maintain their uncirculated condition.
